Random thoughts on International Day of Older Persons.

Everybody wants to live long, but no one wants to grow old. Today, 1st October is the International Day of Older Persons. Twilight years bring along many facets of life.

Are we prepared to face them? Can we say that we will not become old? Do we practice visiting older persons of our own families, relatives, and neighbouring colonies? Have we inculcated enough sense, sensibility and sensitivity among our own children, other younger generations to take care of the older persons?

Geriatric Care is an integral part of Palliative Care.

Let us support our grand old generation to face their twilight issues and worries of failing health and illness, disappointment, lack of self-confidence & ability to concentrate, lack of important things to do, forgetfulness, inability to speak, to hear, to see, gets used to sitting in a chair as pensiveness, vegetating, saying nothing, too much redundant time, too much time for belligerent, craving to travel but no means to do so.

Let us also help them to win over the situations of facing days and years of isolation and little to do, loneliness and neglect, minor ailments and major diseases rear their heads, waking hours are preoccupied with symptoms and pills, diets and therapies, organs and senses seem to stammer, gasp, choke and wheeze before finally quitting, occasionally a lack of reason to live, finding oneself out of phase with the younger generations, unavoidable, undesirable, problem-ridden phase of life

Let us not allow them to feel like compelled to live marking time until final exit from life itself.
