Sheila Dikshit Inaugruated Surgical and Brachytherapy Facilities at Delhi State Cancer Institute

Delhi, August 07.  Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit formally inaugurated here today the Third Phase facilities of the Dilshad Garden based Delhi State Cancer Institute East (DSCI), comprising State-of-the –Art Modular Operation Theatres complex, latest technology High Dose Rate Brach Therapy, Ultra Modern Administration Block and Auditorium complex.  Commissioning of operation theatres at this Institute shall prove boon to the poor cancer patients requiring surgery as now they will not have to go to other hospitals for their surgery.  This is the first such fully integrated modular operation theatres complex of the Country with all the latest technical facilities for undertaking complex cancer surgery procedures with minimum complications and infection.

The DSCI has been engaged in the service of humanity for the last seven years and has now come up as a unique set up with several firsts to its credit as the equipments installed at this Institute are of the latest generation.  This is the first institute in the country under Government to start with latest technical infrastructure including precision radiation treatment with Linear Accelerator in an extremely cheerful and patients-friendly environment.

The physical infrastructure and the ambience created for this Institute is amongst the finest in the country for any government institution.  Within a short span of its existence of just about 7 years, the Institute has been able to earn immense international reputation and has been able to commission another unit with similar facilities in pipeline in West Delhi at Janak Puri as DSCI (West), which is also coming up as a boon for the patients in the region, especially the poor.  The Government is intending to establish an integrated chain of such institutions in Delhi to provide a seamless cover to the people in the region at their doorsteps.

Background
The ultimate aim of the Institute is to create necessary infrastructure for developing it into a role model centre of excellence and to provide state-of-the-art facilities for comprehensive management of all types of cancers with latest concept and technology, including screening, early detection, rehabilitation and outreach services under one roof, besides commencing high-end academic and human resource development program along with dedicated research labs in collaboration with international fraternity.  It is providing free services to the people.
The main motto of the DSCI is that the facilities to be provided should be of international standard and within the reach of common man so that the poorest of the poor also could avail all the facilities.

For the convenience of ever-increasing number of cancer patients, the DSCI runs its OPD and all related services from 7.00 AM in the morning till 7.00 PM in the evening daily with emergency services being provided round the clock.
There has been continued augmentation of services being provided by the DSCI and as a result of it the number of beneficiary patients which were 68,134 during 2007 rose to 2,70,316 upto December 2012.  About 500-700 patients get OPD consultations, about 200-250 and above patients are being given Radiotherapy and 100-150 and above patients are being provided chemotherapy treatment daily.

The second phase facilities comprise 68-bed general ward, 29-bed private, semi-private wards, two VIP suits, 45-day care modern chairs for chemotherapy treatment, two 6 MV Low Energy Linear Accelerator and one High-Dose Linear Accelerator with IGRT & IMRT facilities, 128-slice CT Scanner with RT Simulation, Digital X-Ray with fluoroscopy and Digital subtraction angiography, state-of-the-art mammography equipment with stereotactic biopsy facility, latest generation ultrasound equipment with Breast Elastography and Radiofrequency Ablation system, latest generation 5-part Hematology counter, fully automated biochemistry auto-analyzer, microbiology culture and sensitivity system.

While commissioning of the general ward facilities are continuing to be a great benefit for the poor patients, commencement of the private ward facilities also at this Institute is providing immense relief to  a large number of middle and high income group patients and to the Government/PSU employees who are entitled for reimbursement, as they would be able to avail better facilities at much lesser costs than that of the prevailing cost in the private sector in the field.  This in return would bring revenue for the Institute to further expand its services faster.

ICU, Bone Marrow transplant, PET MR Scan, Medical Cyclotron, Gamma Camera, Radioisotope treatments, Onco-dentistry wing, Research Lab, Academic Programme and Outreach Services along with ISM, Yoga and Naturopathy are in the pipe line.  Many of these programmes at this Institute are being developed in collaboration with reputed such centres at the international level.
